Digital Signage and LED Video Walls: Specification Guide for Indian Buyers
Most signage buyers over-specify the panel and under-specify the software. That gets the ratio backwards.
Key takeaways
- Pixel pitch should be chosen from minimum viewing distance: roughly 1 metre of viewing distance per millimetre of pitch.
- Indoor corporate lobbies need 450+ nits; outdoor-facing installations need up to 6500 nits to stay legible in direct sun.
- The content management system determines the long-term cost of a signage estate far more than the panel specification does.
In corporate corridors from Mumbai BKC to Hinjewadi, Whitefield and Gurugram, information has to move as fast as the business does. But most signage procurement focuses almost entirely on the screen, and the screen is the part least likely to cause regret.
Specifying pixel pitch
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between LED centres. Smaller pitch means higher density and higher cost. The working rule: minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres ≈ pixel pitch in millimetres.
| Pitch | Min. viewing distance | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| P1–P1.8 | 1–2 m | Control rooms, close-viewed lobby walls |
| P2.5–P4 | 2.5–4 m | Corporate video walls, auditoriums |
| P6–P10 | 6–10 m | Outdoor advertising, stadium and facade displays |
Brightness and environment
Indoor lobbies with atrium glazing need 450+ nits to stay readable. Outdoor-facing installations need far more — up to 6500 nits in direct sunlight. Outdoor units also need IP65 sealing, which in Indian conditions is as much about monsoon ingress and dust as it is about temperature.
Industrial Andon: a different product
Lean manufacturing on the Chakan auto belt needs instant feedback, not marketing content. An Andon board reads target versus actual production directly from shop-floor PLCs and sensors, and flashes alerts on downtime. The specification priorities invert: legibility across a full shop floor and protocol integration matter; colour fidelity does not.
Why the CMS decides the real cost
A screen is a one-time purchase. A content management system is a daily interaction. If scheduling across an estate requires a technician with a USB stick, the estate will show stale content within a month — and that is the actual failure mode we see most often.
We include cloud CMS with every signage installation for exactly this reason: a marketing or operations team should be able to reschedule every screen across Pune, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Bengaluru from one dashboard.
